| CAMERON’S
FOUNDATION WORK
As a student of baseball and Afro-American history,
Cameron Maybin has come to greatly admire Jackie Robinson – not
only because he broke the color barrier in Major League
Baseball, but because of the education Robinson received at UCLA
and his service to this country as an officer in the U.S. Army.
And, like Jackie Robinson (although nobody is making
baseball comparisons between the two as of yet), Cam has a deep
understanding of the opportunity he’s been afforded to affect
the lives of people in a positive way. So it isn’t surprising at all
that, upon signing his contract, Cam
made a financial commitment to the Jackie Robinson
Foundation.
That institution’s
commitment to the advancement of minority youths through
educational opportunity and leadership development strongly
resonates with Cameron. So does the fact that the percentage of
Afro-Americans playing Major League Baseball has steadily
declined over the past several years.
Thus, Cam sees a dual
opportunity to lead by example – first, in realizing his
potential on the field as a future star in Major League Baseball
… second, in then using his pro baseball status off the field to
support Afro-American and other minority youths across the
country – whether they choose baseball or any other walk of
life.
